The King's Love Story: STORYLINE

Storyline:

Zhuo Diyi has a crush on his brother’s girlfriend Zha Meile. He is so madly in love with her, he doesn’t know what to do and his heart aches for her. He has long seen his brother involved intimately with other women but he can’t bear to tell Meile lest she suffers a heavy blow. He feels upset that she tries her utmost best at everything she does so as to please his family members and everyone else and yet she doesn’t know how to take good care of herself.

She’s even willing to make and deliver toast to him even though she’s being forced. For him, it’s the only chance he gets to meet her. Other than confessing his love, he has done everything he can. When will she notice? His love is such a miserable one. God knows how much he wishes to be with her. When will the day that she flashes her smile at him come? He’s going to be out of his mind soon!

Zha Meile feels that the situation is absolutely preposterous! Her boyfriend has betrayed and walked out on her but his brother Zhuo Diyi is so obsessed with eating the toast she makes that he can’t live without her? When she was involved in an accident, Zhuo Diyi was there for her all night long and he was more worried for her than his brother. When she was in sorrow and ran away from home, Zhuo Diyi tracked her down like there’s no tomorrow. Did he do all these just for the sake of toast? If he likes her, then why does he call her “foolish” day in day out? But if he detests her, then why is he always around when she needs him? Why is he willing to help her when she’s being bullied?

She really has no clue at all. He is a man who’s as proud as a king and only loves himself. Why would such a man hang around her side? Moreover, it seems like he is also trying to be nice and gentle to her…

Chapter ONE

Zha Meile was twelve years old. One night, she woke up to go to the washroom. She overheard her parents’ conversations when she passed by their bedroom. The content of the conversation frightened her terribly.

Her mother said: “I’m OK with a divorce but I want our son.”

Her father said: “I want our son too. You can have our daughter.”

“Why must I have our daughter? You’re smart, aren’t you? You know that she’s slow and you think that she’ll not make her mark in future, right?”

I’m slow… Zha Meile felt terrible after overhearing them. It wasn’t right for them to abandon her even if she’s really slow. What horrible parents they were; shouldn’t slow people be protected instead? Then she heard her father scolding her mother.

“Speak for yourself. You think that it’s a loss because she’d be marrying someone when she has grown up. Isn’t that why you’re giving her to me? I want our son.”

“I’ll have our son! You can have our daughter.”

“I insist! He’s the eldest grandson in our family. There’s no way I’ll give up.”

“You’re so unreasonable! You have another woman. Why are you fighting with me over our children’s custody rights now?”

“Fine then, you can have the both of them.”

“Why must I take the both of them, I only want our son…”

Zha Meile covered her ears as she ran back into her room. She then hid underneath her blanket. She was lost. It was the truth that she didn’t excel academically like her Bro, who was always first in class. But she never knew academic success would determine if she’d be abandoned someday. If she knew, she’d study like there was no tomorrow.

Meile shuddered as she thought to herself. What should she do if no one wants her at the end of the day? Where would she be going to then? Perhaps the orphanage or she’d have to roam the streets? Or even worse off; she could be sent to the nunnery. That’s right. All the children in the historical dramas always end up being monks or nuns when they are abandoned. Gosh, she didn’t want to be bald. She didn’t want any ring scars on her head or have to go vegetarian and spent her days chanting away while hitting the wooden percussion instrument…

The entire time, Zha Meile lived in fear. She had to observe every move made by her parents and were always on the guard and even had a few false alarms. She was worried that if she’d loosen up for even a second, her parents and brother might be gone then. She didn’t want to be left alone in an empty house… There was no way she’d become a nun!

Within a short period of a month, her academic performance improved tremendously. She was even awarded the ‘Most Polite Student’. She’d always help with housework after school, smile when she’s talking to her parents, and behave extremely well in the presence of relatives. Even her neighbour’s dog was on extremely friendly terms with her. She had managed to form good ties with everyone around her, no matter if they were her family, friends or neighbours.

At this rate, she thought to herself that she would never be abandoned.

Then one fine day, her mother said: “I’m bringing you to a place today.”

They took a cab and it started driving up the mountains. Meile’s eyes widened as she knew something was wrong. Her heart broke when they stopped right in front of a temple.

Oh no. She’s going to become a nun. Meile felt her legs turn jelly. She refused to alight from the cab. She thought to herself that she’d rather roam the streets than become a nun. She closed her eyes and started grabbing firmly onto the front seat.

“What’s the matter? Why aren’t you getting down? Are you suffering from motion sickness? Come on and move…”

“Oh no…” Meile was dragged out of the cab by her mother and they walked into the temple. Meile started to tear and she felt as though she was shrouded in darkness. She wondered why they still chose to abandon her despite all the efforts she had put in…

Her mother lighted some incense and gave it to her. The both of them then kneeled in front of the statue of the deity.

Her mother said: “Gods, my daughter and I will only have each other from now on. Please bless us. As for that man without a conscience, do ensure that he gets his retribution… How dare he have an affair…?”

Her mother continued furiously and tears fell.

Meile stared at the statue and grinned. Thank goodness, she thought. They were there just for praying purposes. She still thought it was the day she was going to become a nun.

After they were done praying, her mother turned around and stroke her head. “Meile, your Dad and I are divorced now. Do you know what that means? You’ve to be a good and obedient child from now on, OK?”

Meile didn’t cry. Her parents’ divorce was nothing compared to the possibility of her becoming a nun. She smiled and nodded profusely. “Yes, OK.” She answered loudly.

“You’re still too young to be able to understand anything. Look, you’re still smiling!” Her mother stared at her sorrowfully.

Time flew by and Zha Meile is now an adult. Thanks to her childhood experience, she vowed to be someone useful since then! Who’d abandon someone as useful as her?

At the age of 29, Meile has already taken a loan from the bank and bought an apartment in Xindian. She co-habits with her boyfriend Cha Qianxun. Life may be busy but was fulfilling and happy for her.

She loves to dress in T-shirts and jeans.  Her figure’s a slender one and she wears a smile on her face at all times. When she thinks about stuff, she has the habit of pursing lips while wearing a firm expression. She might look unkempt; with her hair managed only by a family joint hairdresser but this casualness that she displays actually brings out a sense of simplistic beauty. This makes others approach her more easily. Her boyfriend ever said this to her, “You’re like a bellflower with a light shade of colour. I can’t live without you.” Actually, his family members said the latter to her too. Well, there was one person who didn’t say so but he’s not important so she shall ignore him.

Zha Meile is a very responsible person! At the age of 29, she already has many different kinds of licenses on hand--

When banking jobs were popular, she went to apply for all the courses that have to do with the job. After a while, when becoming an insurance agent was the in thing, she went ahead to apply for all the relevant courses too. There came the economic crisis. Jobs in the finance industry were no longer popular but on the other hand, jobs in the media and communications industry started to gain popularity. Without second thoughts, Meile immediately went for the tests necessary to get her the relevant certifications. Some of the certificates that she acquired included “Professional at Microsoft Word”, “Microsoft Excel, Intermediate level” and “Microsoft PowerPoint for Practical Usage”. She’d apply for the courses if they would be able to serve some form of usage. But at the end of the day, none of it mattered. That was because her beloved boyfriend decided that he wanted to open a bakery.

That was fine for Meile. She was able to ignore all she had done in the past and immediately took up courses which got her certificates and professional license for baking. She was noble indeed, at least she believed that by doing so, her boyfriend would love her so much that he’d never leave her.

She planned and executed the entire ambition of his to open up a bakery. Truth to be told, her boyfriend Zhuo Qianxun, a man who’s three years older than her was just dreaming about it when he told her his ambition. He never expected Meile to complete it all within a flash.

At present, they have a bakery that they can call their own. They have named the bakery as “Qianle Bakery”. The sales were consistent at their bakery. Their employees included a 45 years old divorcee Madam Wang, a 20 years old teenager named Guo Xuanxuan and a quiet 24 years old baker Guan Shaojie.

Meile was in charge of the management while her boyfriend was in charge of marketing and research. Sales increased as the days passed and their feelings for each other also got stronger. Just last November, the two of them got engaged and had already made plans for a June wedding. The wedding planner was, as expected, the most useful person on Earth -- Zha Meile. She was even in charge of Zhuo Qianxun’s younger sister’s confinement1 when she had given birth recently after a premarital pregnancy. Meile was as busy as a bee but there was no choice about that. After all, one would only be this busy because he or she is capable enough. Indeed, Meile was proud and honored that she could be this busy.

“Sis Meile, what should I do? I’m in such a dire state. My poor child...” Zhuo Erjuan laid in bed as she poured her sorrow out to the “very useful” Zha Meile.

It was already midnight in a government hospital. Zhuo Qianxun’s mother and her daughter-in-law-to-be Zha Meile were keeping Zhuo Erjuan company. Zhuo Qianxun was initially around too. But Meile got him to return home first when she saw him yawning nonstop.

Meile frantically tried to comfort her. “Don’t worry too much… you still have your eldest Bro and I. Your child is really cute. You should refrain from being too emotional right after your delivery.”

Erjuan was extremely upset. “That bastard! He promised to love me for a million years then. But look, it has only been close to a year and he has already had a change of heart. He’s even missing now after I told him I was pregnant. What should I do from now on? I need to work and I’m broke. I might as well just go and kill myself now… I’ll kill myself once I’m discharged from the hospital! I shall wear a red dress2 and hang myself…”

“Dumb!” Mrs Zhuo hit her on the head. “You’re such a loser as a person. How better will you be as a ghost? Dry your tears at once! I already warned you about how unreliable that cad is but you turned a deaf ear on my words!” Mrs Zhuo poked Erjuan’s head with her finger again. “Are you a fool?”

“It hurts.” Zhuo Erjuan started screaming.

The both of them then started yelling at each other.

Gosh… These two really have the potential to act in “Taiwan’s Thunderbolt” 3! Meile saw that the situation was getting out of control. She immediately pulled them apart and comforted Erjuan. “Alright, don’t worry about it. I’ve planned it all for you. I’ll be hiring a nanny and you can still go to work…”

She was indeed a very… useful person!

“Is that for real? Can we really do that?” Erjuan gazed at her future sister-in-law pitifully.

“Good heavens. What has our Qianxun done in his previous life to deserve you? What will happen to Erjuan if not for you? You’re really our benefactor…” Mrs Zhuo was so overwhelmed that she held onto Meile’s hands tightly.

“Aunty, I’m really flattered…” Meile hugged the two of them, one in each arm. She was pleased that she was needed by them!

Mrs Zhuo suddenly said emotionally, “Even Meile treats us this well. Look at that ingrate Zhuo Diyi. His own younger sister has given birth and yet he said that he has no time to drop by and visit.” Mentioning her younger son Zhuo Diyi made her really upset.

Zhuo Erjuan felt the same way about him too. “That person only makes people unhappy. He’s so rich and yet he doesn’t even bother to help me. Selfish pig, couldn’t he just ring me up and ask me about my delivery. I’m going treat him as a dead man from now on!”

Meile had to relieve the tense atmosphere. “He’s a musician. Individuals like him who are involved in the making of art tend to be more capricious… I believe that he still loves the family a lot.”

Erjuan decided to be tough. She said, “Mum, let’s sever all ties with him!”

Mrs Zhuo replied, “I’ve long thought about it. Perhaps I should just make an announcement via the papers and do so!”

Ring… Meile’s handphone rang.

“Hello?”

“Are you free tomorrow morning?”

“Is that Zhuo Diyi?” Meile looked at Mrs Zhuo and Erjuan. He actually called while everyone was talking about him. But the person he called was not his own sister. “Diyi, you’re calling to speak to Erjuan, is it? She’s by my side now.” Meile tried to help him salvage the situation.

But Zhuo Diyi did not appreciate her help at all. “Nope, I’m calling because I need to have some toast. Send over three loaves to my place tomorrow morning.” He love the milk toast from their bakery. But he lived on top of a hill located at Xindian. As such, he’d always ring Meile up and get her to deliver toast to him on her way home.

“Did you get your Bro? He can send it too.”

“He said he had to go to Taichung to do some research. He got me to call you instead.”

“Oh…” Meile could feel the deadly glares coming from both Mrs Zhou and Erjuan. She decided to help him once more. “Are you coming over to visit your Sis tomorrow? If you are, I can give them to you here at the hospital.”

“I don’t feel like going down the hill. Send it over before twelve. I hope to have it by noon.”

“But I…”

“The key’s still at the old place. Enter on your own and just put the toast on the table. Bye!”

“Hello…” Zhuo Diyi had already hung up. Meile stared at her phone and Mrs Zhuo and Erjuan did that too. Then --

Bam! The two of them blew their top!

“Mum, do it! Sever all ties with him! He still remembers to call for toast but didn’t even ask about my delivery. I had a child, for goodness’ sake.”

“That ingrate! Why did I give birth to such a son?”

As though scolding him wasn’t enough; they grabbed Meile’s hands and wanted her to join forces with them.

Erjuan said, “Give him a piece of our mind when you deliver the toast to him tomorrow. You’re going to be his elder sister-in-law soon. You should show him the prowess of an elder.”
“Indeed. Discipline him on my behalf. Teach him something about morals. How can he treat his mother and sister like this?”
